Mariusz Hubert Wartalowicz (b. 1962, Warsaw, Poland) is a contemporary conceptual painter and photographer based in Fort Worth, Texas, USA. Working primarily in mixed‑media painting on linen, ceramic, and wood, as well as digital photography, he is best known for his vibrant, multilayered compositions that merge heavy impasto textures, organic shapes, and patterned surfaces with a highly personal, voyeuristic approach to abstracted photographic imagery. His practice is distinguished by its ability to transform obscure physical spaces and overlooked objects into complex expressive works that challenge conventional expectations of form, material, and visual perception.

Wartalowicz’s subject matter centers on pushing the academic boundaries of compositional principles in both painting and photography, advancing them toward conceptual abstraction through extreme close‑up vantage points, deliberate ambiguity, and the juxtaposition of mundane, irrelevant, or awkward objects. His work interrogates the meaning of visual abstraction by exploring the interplay of color, line, texture, pattern, and his own distinctive mark‑making, often returning to recurring motifs such as the curve and sphere to evoke shifting emotional and psychological responses. Important bodies of work include The Encounters XXX (2006–), in which he introduced his dimensional fabric‑paint technique inspired by surrealist, expressionist, and symbolist traditions, as well as The Dead Life (2013–) and Plastic Spaces (2014–), photographic series that elevate atypical and marginalized subjects by presenting them in a celebratory and affirming visual context.

Mariusz Wartalowicz’s work has been exhibited in a range of contemporary art venues and is held in private collections in France, Canada, the United States, and Poland. His participation in ongoing series, conceptual projects, and interdisciplinary explorations continues to expand his presence within the field of contemporary abstraction. Through his evolving practice, he remains committed to advancing critical dialogue around materiality, perception, and the expressive potential of overlooked or unconventional subject matter.
