Mariusz Wartalowicz (b. 1962, Warsaw, Poland) is a conceptual painter and photographer based in Fort Worth, USA. Working primarily in multidisciplinary painting on canvas, ceramic, and wood panel, as well as digital photography, he is best known for his vibrant, multilayered compositions that merge textures, organic shapes, and patterned surfaces with a highly personal, voyeuristic imagery. His practice is distinguished by its ability to transform obscure physical spaces and overlooked objects into complex expressive works that challenge conventional expectations of form, material, and visual perception.
Wartalowicz’s subject matter centers on pushing the academic boundaries of compositional principles in both painting and photography, advancing them toward conceptual abstraction through extreme close‑up vantage points, deliberate ambiguity, and the juxtaposition of mundane, irrelevant, or awkward objects. Important bodies of work include The Encounters XXX (2006–), in which he introduced his dimensional fabric‑paint technique inspired by surrealist, expressionist, and symbolist traditions, The Audacious Associations (2025-) that pose aesthetic questions by contrasting painting, digital image, sound, and literary composition in a single work, The Dead Life (2013–) and Plastic Spaces (2014–), photographic series that elevate atypical and marginalized subjects by presenting them in a celebratory and affirming visual context as well as the newest painting cycle The Dynamos (2026-) that launches his conceptual abstracts into circular movements and sound generation.
Mariusz Wartalowicz’s work has been exhibited in a range of contemporary art venues and is held in private collections in France, Canada, the United States, and Poland.
